| Small business, small batches – while maintaining top quality
The Scandiflex story began in 1986, as a direct reply to customer demand. At the same time as the major segment of the packaging industry moved towards large scale production, the market was looking for increased flexibility, quick deliveries and the option of ordering smaller product lines – without losing quality in neither print nor materials.
This, we have used to our advantage. By listening in to these needs, and by listening to our customer’s needs, we have grown stronger and stronger. Looking back, the market tendencies we saw back in the mid-eighties have only reinforced themselves. The range of grocery products has expanded at an almost explosive rate; and so has the demand for new packaging. Today, we can find not just one or a handful of sausages in our stores, but a plethora of specialised products.
Then, there’s the addition of the new, big grocery chains developing their own brands – the so-called Private Brands; an addition that furthers the demand for packaging, even though the total grocery consumption levels remain constant.
The point of not becoming too big Today, Scandiflex sport three production units for laminates and printing – two in Sweden and one in the UK. In Sweden, we also have a polyethene film manufacturing plant. Some 50% of the film we make, we sell to other companies.
To maintain the dynamic and flexibility of our operation, we have made a strategic choice in not allowing our units to grow too large. At most, we have some 50-60 people working at each unit. In total, Scandiflex employs some 100 people. In 2004 our turnover amounted to some 100 million SEK.
